National day of disability observed

The community development department with partner organisations yesterday observed the National Day of Persons with Disability with a breakfast at Port Moresby’s Holiday Inn.

The event was attended by stakeholders including representatives from disability organisations and persons living with disability.

With the theme ‘Remove barriers, build resilient societies, create an opportunity that leaves no one behind’, the event also included a panel discussion by heads of various stakeholders including secretary for Community Development Anna Solomon.

Laws, regulations and work opportunities were some of the objectives discussed during this event.

Secretary Solomon added that persons living with disability have the right to all forms of societies and opportunities however, there needs to be consideration of their condition, hence it is in the best interest of the office with other partners to build and focus on making this possible.

Removing barriers also includes the inclusion of persons living with disability to the work force and the laws and policies that can protect them and help them achieve this outcome.

This was emphasized by representative for Constitutional Law Reform Commission, Loise Stanley, who noted that the new disability bill will look closely at many of the issues being faced by people living with disabilities.
