Manus police awareness program starts

Police in Manus have commenced the 2018 awareness program, visiting two villages yesterday where they spoke with locals on law and order issues.

The awareness is an important part of their policing program in the wards and local level governments, where the provincial police commander and his team visited Koronat Island and Timonai villages.

Police in the province recently created new divisions to deal with sexual offence cases and family and sexual violence and abuse cases.

The visits were used to carry out awareness on sexual offences, including family and sexual violence and abuse as well as general law and order issues such as homebrew production and consumption.

The PPC, Chief Inspector David Yapu, who addressed about 50 people who gathered at KoronatĀ  Island, said it was important for police to come down to their level to conduct awareness.

He thank community leader Ben Wamoi and other leaders from Koronat Island for inviting him and his officers.

A reconciliation ceremony also took place at Koronat Island, which police commended the leaders for their initiatives in dealing with such matters at village level.
