Treasury and private sector to meet

Consultations between the Port Moresby based private sector and the Department of Treasury as part of efforts to develop the National Competition Policy for Papua New Guinea will be held next week.

The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday 16th May at the Grand Papua Hotel.

Competition and consumer protection are cross-cutting issues affecting the provision of public services, trade and investment, land, market behaviour and enforcement.

And to ensure that the proposed National Competition Policy reflects the needs of the business community, Treasury is interested to hear the views of private sector bodies in Papua New Guinea.

The proposal for a National Competition Policy is a key recommendation from the Treasury-led Consumer and Competition Framework Review carried out during 2015-16 with assistance from the Asian Development Bank’s Pacific Private Sector Development Initiative (PSDI).

A Consultation Paper identifies matters that should be addressed by a national policy on competition and consumer protection. The Consultation Paper also includes a draft of the proposed National Competition Policy.
