Mt Kare Landowners want Minister’s decision to start mine operation

Landowners of Mt Kare gold mine project are calling on Mining Minister Byron Chan to make a decision to bring in a developer to start mining operations as soon as possible.

John Tarale from the Komai clan, Jeffery Leo and James Kerene from the Heli clan, speaking on behalf of the 12 main clans of Paiala in Enga Province told Loop PNG that it is now 29 years since Mt Kare was first discovered and up until today nothing has happened.

“Our people are dying and were are the next generation of landowners and we want Minister Byron Chan and Summit and MRA to set aside the court case and to start the gold mining operation,” Tarale said.

Jeffery Leo of the Heli clan called for a round table discussion with Minister Chan, and MRA to set aside the case.

“We need a decision for a developer to do the job, we understand there are nine application with the MRA and we cannot keep on delaying this project,” Leo said.

It is understood there is a court case on Mt Kare between Summit and the Government which has caused delays in getting the Mt Kare Gold Mine operations started.
