A fundraising event for the Lihir International Primary School is anticipated to be an empowering factor for students to work hard to pursue their goals.
Lihir Gold Limited Superintendent-Mine Safety, Leo Kola, stated this when the company recently supported the schools car wash fundraising activity to support their biannual trip to Brisbane this year.
Kola and a team from the company brought in a Light Mine Vehicle from the mine pit to the school during the fundraiser.
“The kids had to wash the mud down and in the process realise that mining is a tough and dirty job.
“Hopefully this experience will empower them to be tough in pursuing their goals as students,” said Kola.
The team made a cash donation to grade six and seven students to support their fundraiser.
It is during this trip that students get an opportunity to visit a few schools in Brisbane and promote exposure for the PNG students.
Kola and the team also conducted a ‘Trupla Man, Trupla Meri’ (TMTM) awareness session with them to empower them as future leaders of the country.
“It is our duty as LGL employees to empower, motivate and donate whatever little we have to students in the country so we can build a better and vibrant future,” he said.
Graduate-Mine Engineer, Helen Alua, said such fundraising events provide great opportunities for empowerment.
“It is good to allow children to be informed about TMTM and the message we drive through this campaign.
“They too have the power to break the chain of violence,” she said.
Kola once said that Lihir employees were ‘miners with compassion.’
He meant that the power of compassion shown in little ways as such can and will change the world when exercised consciously and intentionally.
TMTM is Lihir’s behavioral change campaign, aiming at empowering people to live and behave positively.
