Local coffee producer attracts APEC delegates

The third Senior Officials’ Meeting currently underway in Port Moresby started off on Saturday with discussions surrounding policy dialogue on women in agriculture and fisheries.

One stall that attracted delegates was that of coffee grown and produced in Central Province.

Produced by Central Dakis Mamina Trading, the coffee is packed from beans grown in inland Rigo, the mountains of Koiari and Goilala.

It is owned by Nellie Varmari and her husband Konie.

Varmari said they have been producing Central Mamina Coffee for a year now.

Coffee beans are bought from farmers in inland Rigo (where her husband is from), and processed at Superior Coffee at Konedobu.

“We’ve had big interest from delegates. Some now want me to sell my coffee at Waterfront Foodworld, some even want me to export it so now I have to work very hard,” said Varmari.

Central Mamina Coffee or Central taste coffee is not on the shelves of shops yet, but has already become a favourite to visiting delegates here for the APEC meetings.

Meantime, Minister for Agriculture and Livestock, Benny Allan, yesterday (Aug 7) visited the meeting venue and says he is pleased with the dialogue and the produce showcase at the meeting.

Minister Allan said such agenda had not been discussed in any APEC meetings and was happy to see it being brought up.

He also visited agriculture stalls and was pleased with the display.
