Housing policy 90pc complete

The National Housing Corporation is looking at becoming an authority so that it can regulate accommodation rentals in the real estate industry.

Housing Minister John Kaupa, when responding to questions raised by Menyamya MP, Thomas Pelika, in Parliament today, said at this stage, NHC cannot regulate the rentals, but the NHC board that was recently sworn in, is working on a policy.

Kaupa said the policy is 90 percent completed and once that is done, it will go to parliament for endorsement.

Pelika asked a supplementary question if the minister and NHC had any plans to control or regulate the rentals.

The real estate industry remains unregulated, with rentals unaffordable even for the working class, pushing many to resort to renting properties in unzoned areas of Port Moresby.
