More spending needed in hubs: Foo

Air Niugini CEO Simon Foo says more spending is needed in key hubs around the country.

This is to take advantage of PNG’s strategic location in the Pacific Region.

Speaking at the Australia-PNG Business Forum, he said airports in key hubs such as Mt Hagen, Lae and Rabaul need to be upgraded, which will significantly improve volume for the carrier.

“Currently we cannot bring a 737 into these ports. What will it be like if we can bring a 737 into those key hubs on a 24-hour operation?

“We’ll make a significant change to our volume,” Foo said.

He added the redevelopment at Jackson’s in Port Moresby has given PNG a fresh start to capitalise on the country’s position as a gateway to the Pacific.

With the opening of new routes to Micronesia and Townsville in the last 12 months, the CEO says this will significantly increase volume for the carrier, which currently sees 1000 passengers a week.
