Hong Kong pledges support to PNG

Hong Kong has pledged to support PNG in its endeavours, especially in capacity building.

These were made known in a brief closed-door bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Peter O’Neill and Hong Kong Chief Executive, Carrie Lam, November 19th.

On behalf of Hong Kong’s Premier, Lam told Prime Minister O’Neill that Hong Kong is happy to share its experiences with PNG in various aspects as far as capacity building is concerned.

“We look forward to seeing you again in future meetings or when you next visit Hong Kong.”

Accepting this offer, O’Neill conveyed his gratitude to the government and people of Hong Kong for extending their support, particularly when PNG bid to host the 2018 APEC Summit.

Recognising Hong Kong as a financial hub of Asia and a destination which accommodates a lot of people in the region, O’Neill said PNG is looking towards increasing flights to Hong Kong.

“We have had direct flights to Hong Kong for some time but we want to increase that participation and the movement of people,” said O’Neill.

The Chief Executive of Hong Kong also extended their gratitude to PNG for the hospitality and for the reception that they were given upon arrival and during their stay in Port Moresby.
