SIM registration deadline looming

For some, it’s work as usual despite today being a public holiday.

This was the case with the Digicel SIM registration team, led by Darren Lepilis, the retail executive.

Lepilis and the team have a deadline to meet.

He said as per the directive from the National Information & Communications Technology Authority (NICTA), all SIM cards have to be registered by the end of the year. Failure to do so will result in the SIM card being deactivated.

His team has been out in full force since yesterday, setting up in communities, with the help of volunteers.

“As the telecommunication provider, we’re doing our best to make this process convenient to our users/customers,” he said.

Bathsheba Yambu was one user who chose to stand in a line to get her SIM card registered instead of celebrating Christmas.

Today, the Digicel team opened the gates at their headquarters, allowing more public to register.

This process will continue over the few days leading to the New Year.

Lepilis is urging everyone to register their SIM cards.

He said once one’s SIM card is deactivated, the process to reactivate it would cost more than a hundred kina.
