Pros and Cons of social media and technology

Social Media has taken over normal face-to-face conversations between groups of people, particularly the younger generation, most of whom are still in school.

The Office of Censorship was at the Gordon Secondary School this afternoon to share the pros and cons of technology.

Officers noted that because of the high usage of technology every day, it was equally important to understanding its impact and influence, which may be far greater and beyond a harmless profile picture.

The Office of Censorship illustrated its impacts today; telling students that while it’s their right to access information online – it’s their responsibility to understand and use it wisely.

The information was disseminated through the use of dramas; though short and amusing much to the students’ enjoyment, the message behind the plays highlighted the realities of today.

Apart from talking to the students about illegal DVDs and videos being sold in the streets, special emphasis was placed on social media and how the cyber environment through platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp have diverted the attention of young people.

Acting Executive Manager of the Office of Censorship’s Strategic Policy and Coordination, Karen Gabby led discussions on the amount of money and time spent by students leading them to be  distracted from school work.

The office of censorship has been to 11 schools this year educating and reminding young people of the positive uses of technology, because at present the office does not have monitoring system.

Meantime, the Office of Censorship currently works with the Police Drug Squad and Customs to regulate information and materials that come into the country for the purpose of promoting human decency and self-respect.
