Digicel plans metro fibre system

Digicel (PNG) Limited aims to launch a metro fibre system in PNG.

The objective is to connect major towns in the country to a high speed internet connectivity that will be propelled by the Coral Sea Cable System from Australia to PNG.

This was revealed by Digicel PNG Head of Business Solutions, Paul Statham, at the PNG Investment Conference in Brisbane.

“We have very aggressive plans to build a metro fibre across major towns across Papua New Guinea, leveraging our backhaul network that covers the nation and consists of over 12,000 towers,” Statham said.

On Thursday, Minister for State Owned Enterprises, William Duma, announced the state’s plan to introduce the Kumul Domestic Submarine Cable Project.

The Kumul Domestic Submarine Cable Project will connect all 15 coastal provincial capitals to the fibre optic submarine cable.

The domestic cable is funded through the China Aid program of K200 million.

Minister Duma said private telcos such as Digicel, if they decide to, can have access to the Coral Sea Cable System provided that all regulatory requirements are met.
