Twitter, Facebook and YouTube have been banned by North Korea

The country has announced that it is officially banning Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and all South Korean sites.

The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications made the announcement this week in a move to highlight its worry over the spread of online information.

Although few North Koreans have internet access, with some able to access a government-sanctioned intranet, foreigners had previously been able to browse with little restriction.

The move will inevitably make it more difficult to spread information about the country to the outside world.

YouTube reportedly wants to get into 360-degree live streaming

The video giant wants to allow users to be able to upload 360-degree footage from 360-degree camera hardware as they would from a regular snapper, according to BuzzzFeed News.

YouTube's talks with the camera manufacturers are said to be centred around creating an industry standard for 360-degree video streaming, as few commercial devices are capable of that feat.

Most that can pull it off offer low-quality streaming, although workaround solutions exist. For instance, some cameras shoot multiple angles at once and splice them together after recording has ended.

Facebook might soon launch its own 'dedicated space for video'

During today's Facebook quarterly earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg let it be known that his social media company wants to better cater to users who spend a combined total of 100 million hours watching video daily.

"We're exploring ways to give people a dedicated place on Facebook when they just want to watch video," Zuckerberg told investors.

Such a move would likely move Facebook into competition with YouTube, the current dominant force among streaming video content providers.

No timeline has been set for when such a project would enter development at Facebook.

YouTube Red steps up its bid to be the new Netflix

The company's executives have been meeting with Hollywood studios and production companies in the hope of strengthening its new ad-free subscription video streaming service Red with new titles, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Although negotiations are thought to be in early stages, the company is said to be focusing on new material, as opposed to older titles.

It was previously announced that YouTube Original Series and Movies will be available next year through YouTube Red and will include work from the likes of PewDiePie and The Fine Brothers.

YouTube makes virtual reality push with 360 degrees 3-D

Thursday's announcement comes a day after the debut of the first online 360-degree ad, a commercial for Bud Light.

Right now, viewers using the mobile YouTube app or Google's Chrome browser can pan around in any direction in the 360-degree videos. They're shot using special camera rigs that look in many directions, and software stitches together all the video.
