PPC Western confirms death not related to shooting

That's from the province's police boss, Tep Puri today.

Puri said the riots in Kiunga resulted from a fight between locals which started on Wednesday.

He said police were called in to stop the fight and one officer fired warning shots to disperse the crowd.

"Pellets from the officer's gun hit two people. Both were taken to hospital and one has since been discharged," Puri said.

He said the officer that fired the warning shot has been arrested and his weapon confiscated for further investigation.

Western report calm at fight scene

Provincial police commander Silva Sika tells PNG Loop that investigations are progressing into the sorcery related fights that have taken place within the area.

The fighting has been going on for the past three months following some sorcery related attacks on villagers.

PPC Western Silva Sika says that the area is renowned for the belief of sorcery but says that the police investigation will focus on the arson cases that saw several houses burnt down as well as the murder of an old man.
