Water Police

Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) and Bulolo MP Sam Basil made this statement, adding that many crimes that happened at seas were reported but there was a lack of response because of a lack of resources.

Minister Basil said, “This is to make sure that we help the job of the National Fisheries Authority, Forestry Authority to help fight transnational crimes that happen at our boarders in the Maritime Provinces.”

The betel-nut bags were intercepted by police on Sunday, March 29^th, when being smuggled into Port Moresby by three boats.

There is currently a ban on the sale and chewing of betel-nut under the current State of Emergency.

Following a tip off, Water Police intercepted three boats smuggling betel-nut into Port Moresby, late on Sunday afternoon.

The confiscation is part of the implementation of the State of Emergency in which the sale and chewing of betel-nut has been banned in the wake of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

This follows AUD 3 million (Australian Dollars) worth of facilities and equipment was handed over today at the water police HQ at Konedobu in the Nation’s capital.

COP Baki said this presentation is part of strengthening and preparing the Water police for the coming APEC summit.

He says because this event will see global leaders enter the country there is a need for an increase in security alertness and preparedness.

The equipment includes two boats, six jet skiis, two buoys, two vehicles and a warehouse to house the equipment.
