Philippines' Rodrigo Duterte threatens to leave UN

Mr Duterte said he might ask China and African nations to form another body. He also accused the UN of failing on terrorism, hunger and ending conflicts.

Mr Duterte, elected in May, has sanctioned the killing of traffickers to try to wipe out the drugs trade.

The UN has repeatedly condemned the drive as a violation of human rights.

Some 900 suspected drug traffickers have been killed since Mr Duterte was elected on 9 May.

Hundreds of city youths celebrate International Youth Day

IYD is an awareness day designated by the United Nations.

The first IYD was observed on 12 August, 2000.

The purpose of the day is to draw attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding youth. 

It is meant as an opportunity for governments and others to draw attention to youth issues worldwide.

The event in Moresby commenced as early as 5am at the ‘Walk for Life’ event with National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop.

Zika: UN health agency launches database on worldwide virus research

The database is called the Zika Research Projects List.

In a press release, the agencies said PAHO has systematically identified and collected basic information on all investigations related to Zika, both those already published and those on track to be published. The database includes the title, authors and a direct link to the article. 

NCD women carry out market awareness at Gordon

This was a challenge to the youths of Gordon’s community during an awareness campaign initiated by United Nations, National Capital District Commission and the Royal PNG Constabulary today at the Gordons market.

The campaign aimed at discouraging youths from harassing women and girls in the community especially at the Gordons market area and on the streets.

The United Nations (UN) states it is vital therefore for PNG to accelerate efforts to achieve gender equality and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The UN reports that pervasive cultural and systemic obstacles still prevent women from participating in political and economic life in PNG as well as many other nations.

UN agencies in PNG are working with other stakeholders to advance gender equality.

It is a day that is celebrated by the United Nations (UN) since 1975 and serves as a day to celebrate, acknowledge and recognize the work of women in their countries and communities.

The UN appeals for more effort in realizing gender equality as stated by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Goal 4 specifically targets “gender equality”, all other goals also necessitate gender equality and engagement of women.

UN strongly recognizes women as key agents of change in achieving the SDGs.

Governments must commit to eliminating homelessness by 2030

Governments have been called on to recognize homelessness as a human rights crisis and commit to its eradication by 2030, in line with the new UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Presenting her report to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to housing, Leilani Farha said that homelessness is found throughout the world, in all countries regardless of the level of development of their economic and governance systems.
