Today is Human Rights Day

Today is your day.

December 10 is observed every year as the international Human Rights Day.

It commemorates the day on which, in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

In 1950, the Assembly passed resolution 423 (V), inviting all States and interested organizations to observe December 10 each year as Human Rights Day.

This year, Human Rights Day calls on everyone to stand up for someone's rights!

They have been talking about their hopes for a new internationally-supervised self-determination vote for the indigenous people of Indonesia's Papua region.

Mr Wenda said the lobbying gives them an opportunity to correct misinformation spread internationally about Papua by Jakarta and people within the UN system appreciate the discussions.

Emergency Relief Co-ordinator Stephen O'Brien said the figure had jumped from 486,700 to 974,080 in six months.

People were being "isolated, starved, bombed and denied medical attention and humanitarian assistance in order to force them to submit or flee," he said.

Mr O'Brien noted that the "deliberate tactic of cruelty" was mostly employed by President Bashar al-Assad's forces.

Australia asylum: UN criticises 'cruel' conditions on Nauru

Australia sends asylum seekers who arrive by boat to centres in Nauru and Papua New Guinea's Manus Island.

Francois Crepeau, the UN special rapporteur on migrant human rights, has just finished an 18-day stint examining Australia's immigration laws.

He said in Canberra on Friday that conditions on Nauru were "cruel, inhuman and degrading".

"Australia would vehemently protest if its citizens were treated like this by other countries and especially if Australian children were treated like this," the Canadian lawyer said.

What climate change deniers, like Donald Trump, believe

He pledged to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, which leading nations signed in April, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Donald Trump doesn't believe global warming is a real threat to the USA.

He tweeted his opinions on the matter in 2012 and 2014, although later denied his tweets, when challenged by Hillary Clinton.

Maria Sharapova to be reinstated as UN ambassador

It says that the UN is looking forward to working with her to discuss her role "at an appropriate date".

The player admitted in March that she had taken the substance meldonium at the Australian Open in January.

She was subsequently banned for two years by an investigating tribunal.

But last month her suspension was reduced to 15 months after she filed an appeal.

UN sacks South Sudan peacekeeping chief over damning report

The report backed claims by aid workers that the UN troops refused to respond when government soldiers attacked an international aid compound in Juba.

In the fighting between the army and former rebels, a local journalist was killed and aid workers were raped.

The clashes derailed efforts to form a unity government and end the civil war.

232 executed near Mosul, thousands more used as human shields

The terror group carried out the mass killings Wednesday, punishing people who had defied its orders, a spokeswoman for the UN human rights arm told CNN.

"ISIS executed 42 civilians in Hammam al-Alil, south of Mosul. Also on Wednesday ISIS executed 190 former Iraqi security forces for refusing to join them, in the Al Ghazlani base near Mosul," said Ravina Shamdasani of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Another 24 former Iraqi security forces officers were reportedly killed Tuesday, the office said.

Syria conflict: UN urges inquiry into deadly air strike on school

Activists say a village school was targeted in rebel-held Idlib.

The UN also warned that the coming winter could be the worst yet in Syria's five-year-long civil war.

Its Syria humanitarian effort head, Jan Egeland, said the brutal conflict had become more ruthless.

He said it was affecting increasing numbers of civilians.

Unicef said that, including the one in Idlib, five Syrian schools had been targeted since 11 October in "simply inhuman" attacks.
