The harsh reality of suicide

This World Health Organization statement was recently highlighted during the World Mental Health Day commemoration.

The World Mental Health Day falls on October 10 every year.

For 2019, the theme was ‘focus on suicide prevention’. This year, a call for “40 seconds of action” is made to raise awareness of the scale of suicide around the world and the role that each of us can play to help prevent it.

Speaking at the event in Port Moresby, Dame Carol Kidu said the significance of suicide as a global public health problem is often not recognised.

Akubra girl Dolly's online bullying suicide shocks Australia

In a Facebook post, the father of Amy "Dolly" Everett called for more awareness of bullying so his daughter's life "will not be wasted".

Akubra also expressed its condolences, issuing a call for all to "stand up" against any kind of bullying.

One in five children in Australia say they were bullied in the past year.

In his emotional Facebook post, written on Sunday, Dolly's father, Tick Everett, gave no details of the bullying, but said she had wanted to "escape the evil in this world".

Lawes Rd hanging: Suspects arrested

The deceased, from Simbu province, was found hanging at one of the houses at Lawes Road, Port Moresby. She was discovered in the earlier hours of October 21.

Upon arriving at the crime scene, homicide detectives suspected that foul play was involved. This was due to bruises being evident hours after her death, including strangulation marks on her throat.

Officer-in-charge of the National Capital District police homicide unit, Ulagis Mantu, told this newsroom that the arrests were made according to investigations.

The deceased, reportedly a Grade Four student at the Christ the King Primary School at 10-Mile, was found hanging from a rope tied to the ceiling timbers.

According to Chief Inspector Timothy Pomoso, the 14yo was found by relatives who called the police.

He said CID found some marks and bruises on the body of the deceased; there is a possibility of a case of abuse that may have led to the suicide of this young girl. However, this is yet to be proven as investigation continues.

The child she was carrying was also killed.Huo Junwei, a doctor at the Yulin Number One hospital, told China Economic Daily that Ms Ma "left the ward twice and told her family that the pain was unbearable, and that she wanted a caesarean section, but the family were not willing to allow the procedure."Her husband, surnamed Yan, refutes this, telling Beijing Youth Daily that "we did not disagree to a caesarean".

Police: Refugee tried committing suicide last year

Manus Provincial Police Commander, Chief Inspector David Yapu, said he is of Iranian nationality.

“The deceased was identified as Hamed Shamshiripou, 28 years of age from Iran and lives at East Lorengau Refugee Transit Centre,” he said.

He said the deceased’s body was found hanging on the branch of a tree near East Lorengau Elementary by students at 9am on Monday, August 7.

“After receiving the report of the suicide, police and Papua New Guinea Immigration and Citizenship Authority Services (PNGICSA) attended to the scene and retrieved the body,” PPC Yapu said.

Police investigating refugee’s death

Manus Provincial Police Commander, Chief Inspector David Yapu, confirmed the death with Loop PNG. Police allege it was a suicide case.

His identity is yet to be determined. Police were at the scene at the time this story was published.

PPC Yapu said the body was found hanging near the Lorengau Primary School.

Students from the school discovered the decomposed corpse, which is said to have been there for about three days.

The deceased was also said to be mentally ill.

He referred to a friend who had apparently tried to take his own life.

"It was really hard and really confusing and really sad," the 38-year-old revealed to music reporter Steve Holden.

"Sometimes it just feels like life is testing you."

Chris Cornell's family disputes preliminary suicide finding

The city's medical examiner said 52-year-old Cornell — the lead singer in Soundgarden and Audioslave — died early Thursday morning after performing at a concert on Wednesday night.

But Cornell's family said without toxicology test results completed they do not know what caused his death.

On Friday, an official said the results of a full autopsy and toxicology tests could take days before they are completed and released.
