New curriculum for PNG schools

A curriculum that will have to go before Cabinet for approval, Education Minister Nick Kuman says STEM curriculum will be introduced in the education system after 2020 with English as the language of instruction.

Just when the SBE curriculum is being implemented in all public schools in the country after the failed Outcome Based Education was abolished, a new curriculum, called STEM, will be introduced after 2020.

SBE curriculum to be fully implemented by 2019

In preparation for the full implementation of the curriculum at the elementary level, the Department of Education (DoE) has already carried out training sessions in all provinces in 2015 and 2016.

Over 17,000 elementary teachers have been trained and are ready for implementation.

7, 000 elementary schools in the country will begin the 2017 academic year with the new curriculum learning kits.

The delivery of SBC elementary syllabuses, teacher guides and English kits to all elementary schools throughout the country was launched today.

Changes with Standard Based Education

PNG abolished the Outcome Based Education (OBE) as many researchers including the public have argued that the failure in education system in the country was due to OBE.

Many have claimed that OBE has negative impact on the overall education system.

Teaching Service Commission (TSC) urged teachers to be prepared to meet the challenges that will come with this change.

The curriculum changes include the introduction of English as a compulsory subject in elementary schools and the use of phonics to teach English.
