Blatter and Platini receive eight year bans from FIFA

Platini's bid to succeed Blatter as FIFA president in a 26 Febuary election is now likely to be over.

Ethics judges ruled that Blatter broke FIFA Code of Ethics rules on conflicts of interest, breach of loyalty and offering gifts.

Platini broke rules on conflict of interest and loyalty.

Both denied wrongdoing in 2011 when Platini took $2.8 million of FIFA money approved by Blatter as uncontracted salary for work as a presidential adviser from 1999-2002.

Blatter was fined $70,000 and Platini was fined $112,000.

Blatter exits International Olympic Committee

Thomas Bach, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President, told journalists attending the 128th IOC Session in Malaysia that Blatter had sent him a letter last month informing him that his mandate as FIFA President would come to an end on February 26, when FIFA would elect a new head.

For this reason, and because he was unable to attend the Session, Bach went on, Blatter did not think it appropriate that he be proposed for a new IOC mandate.

Bach told IOC members he had written to Blatter to "thank him for his outstanding service".
