Free-roaming dog population issue to be addressed

This will be achieved through a comprehensive dog population management plan involving dog collections, promotion of responsible pet ownership and de-sexing.

For years, the RSPCA of PNG has conducted a rehoming and adoptions program aimed at finding homes for stray, abandoned and unwanted animals in Port Moresby that are taken into the RSPCA as part of the NCDC-RSPCA dog collection programs. According to Johnny Kasom, the Operations Manager of RSPCA PNG, the NCDC Dog Pound has been managed by RSPCA PNG for over 10 years.

Over K60,000 raised for RSPCA programs

The event was hosted to raise funds for their animal adoption and education program.

Fourteen business houses took part on April 26th. Additional support came from 18 other businesses who supported the event by sponsoring holes.

“We take this opportunity to thank our sponsors and supporters who contributed to making this event possible and the success that it was,” said RSPCA in a statement.

RSPCA to host charity golf day

The Three-Person Ambrose event will be hosted at the Port Moresby Golf Club.

Team registration is K3,000 whilst business houses and individuals are given the opportunity to sponsor a hole for K500.

The fundraising drive is to raise money to cover the operational costs of the RSPCA’s Education and Adoption Programs.

Over K5,000 worth of equipment for RSPCA

The value of the equipment totaled over K5,000.

In a statement, RSPCA said: “Earlier this year, the RSPCA of PNG held a fundraising event to raise money for equipment needed for our clinic.

“We were overjoyed with the support we received from business houses and individuals. Amongst the businesses that came to our aid was Red Sea Housing PNG.”

Over K48,000 raised in RSPCA fundraiser

The Longest Lunch, hosted on Sunday 18th of February, raised enough for the organisation to purchase its top 5 items from its wish list.

The items are an orthopaedic pack, a suction unit, an animal scale, a diagnostic set for operating and a blood pressure monitor.

“The support of the people of Port Moresby for our event was just amazing. We can’t thank everyone enough,” said RSPCA general manager, Hellen White.

What is neutering?

Neutering is the removal of an animal’s reproductive organs, either all of it or a considerably large part. It is the most common sterilising method in animals.

For males, the word neuter is usually applied, whereas for females it is known as spaying. The usual procedures involved are castration (for males) and ovariohysterectomy (for females).

The neutering procedure has assumed an important role in the management and control of companion animal populations such as cats and dogs.

Hunters’ historical support

Community liaison coordinator, Brigitte Baki-Ta’u, said yesterday the Hunters donated an autographed team jersey to the RSPCA of PNG.

“The donation was made to show the team’s support for the animal welfare organisation and to aid the RSPCA in their fundraising drive for much-needed contributions toward the building of their new animal hospital,” she says.

During the historical moment, team captain, Ase Boas, presented the team jersey to the RSPCA’s General Manager, Hellen White.

Helping those who cannot help themselves

The RSPCA of PNG, like many animal shelters throughout the world, runs an Animal Adoption Program. This was set up in the late 1980’s, when the RSPCA was run by a committee and a handful of dedicated volunteers. This initial group of animal lovers operated with and through the Port Moresby Animal Pound.

Beautiful mural vandalised

In a statement, RSPCA said: “This mural was painted by the internationally renowned PNG artist, the late Martin Morubabuna, in 2010.”

Thankfully, an air conditioning firm stepped in to lend a helping hand.

“South Pacific Air Conditioning is an avid supporter of the RSPCA of PNG and over the years, has donated and contributed to many of our needs, including having the graffiti cleaned,” stated RSPCA.

Having fun at the RSPCA stall!

Community liaison coordinator, Brigitte Baki-Ta’u, says the event, hosted by the Port Moresby Nature Park, was another success!

“Many organisations were happy to participate and talk about their contributions to saving or helping maintain our environment clean and healthy for all,” she said.

The World Environment Day theme for this year was ‘Connecting people to nature’.

So how does the RSPCA of PNG connect people to nature?
