PNG attends Bonn Climate Conference

The PNG delegation was led by Managing Director of the Climate Change & Development Authority, Ruel Yamuna, and two other colleagues from the CCDA.

PNG's focus was on a number of items including the Nationally Determined Contributions discussions, Adaptation Fund, and REDD plus.

The discussions in Bonn, have led to a new dynamic era where climate change issues and implementation under the Paris Agreement, will include and incorporate aspects of sustainable activities in development, trade practices and private sector investment.

Papua New Guinea’s deforestation problem

Eleven years ago, PNG formed the Coalition for Rainforest Nations and presented the idea of REDD to the UN climate meeting in Montreal.

The architect of REDD, Kevin Conrad, completed his MBA in International Finance at Columbia University in 2005. For his final MBA project, Conrad looked at whether the money from carbon credits could be as profitable as logging in Papua New Guinea. He decided that it could.

TIPNG to host REDD media awareness workshop

Advocacy and Communications Officer, Sally Korerua appealed to journalists from different media organizations to attend.

It will take place in September from 9am-12pm and will be held at the Institute of National Affairs board room at IPA Haus.

“The media plays a crucial role in exposing corruption and raising general awareness about its detrimental impacts in society.

“However, information communicated about corruption may lack credibility if reporting is not insightful and accurate,” said Korerua.
