Public Servants Netball Association

Netball association promotes healthy living

The President of the Association is encouraging more women to join and experience the benefits that come with being active.

Since 1989, the association has seen an increase from just four public service teams playing in Port Moresby to 55.

President Maria Laka is urging women and daughters of public servants to join the association, saying it will keep them healthy and fit, not to mention it will be a good avenue to build connections mentally and physically.

Public servants comp completes week three

Vice president Maria Laka said there are 43 teams playing across the seven divisions (1-6 plus the premier division).

Teams include Works, Bank of Papua New Guinea, PNG Forest Authority, PNG Power, Telikom, Auditor General and Finance.

“We started last weekend. We will have five games played in round one and another five in round two,” Laka said.

“The finals for the competition will be held in March of next year.”

Flying start for public servants netball

Teams came out in numbers to register their participation for the 2017/2018 season when game of season proper got underway yesterday.

Teams had to double up matches due to the cancellation of game one last week and newly-elected president of the Public Servants Netball Association, Rawa Stoi, wants the competition to be an avenue to promote healthy living among the womenfolk.

There are six divisions, including the premiere division, which includes Fisheries and NHC and the 2017/2018 season promises to be one full of flare.

Public servants netball season starts

While many women in the public service take it as leisure time, others use it as a fitness and networking event to win.

Following a successful Annual General Meeting for the 2017/2018 season, IRC’s most senior and experienced goal keeper, Rawa Stoi, was elected as president of the Public Servants Netball Association.

Newly-elected executive members for 2018 right through to the 2020 season were announced in taking up the task to steer the off-season netball competition to greater heights.

Public servants netball competition nears finals

Vice President, Maria Laka said the 2016-17 season started last year in December with initially 40 teams taking part.

“Interest dropped a bit after the venues were closed early this year. We had many forfeits and some teams even pulled out from the competition.

“But we’ve picked up and are currently into the second week of the second round. We have two more weekends left before the semi-finals start,” said Laka.

Laka said the tentative date for the finals for all eight divisions will be on March 18.
