Newcomer Emma Corrin cast as Princess Diana

Netflix confirmed the decision in a press release, adding filming will begin later this year.

In an accompanying quote, Corrin said she was "beyond excited" to be joining the show - a dramatised history of the British monarchy.

"Princess Diana was an icon, and her effect on the world remains profound and inspiring," she said.

The Crown's creator Peter Morgan described Corrin as a "brilliant talent" who "immediately captivated" casting directors.

Yet it is the princess's people who are the focus of Diana and I, a 90-minute drama that explores how her death affected members of the public.

"The idea was to write a film about Diana's death, not from the point of view of the Royal Family or politicians, but of ordinary people," says writer Jeremy Brock.

"I wanted to tell stories that resonated legitimately with how I remember what happened, and how we deal with being human."

HBO seeks to stand apart from that wave with "Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy," an intimate but gauzy look back, its most salient aspect being that her sons, William and Harry, participate in the reminiscing.
