K20,000 served for tennis, squash program

The Port Moresby Racquets Club School Development Program was reignited in June 2019 with the participation of five schools; Bavaroko Community, Birdwing Independent, Lahara Avenue, Port Moresby Grammar and Boroko Primary.

Squash Director Merlyn Alarcos-Kriebisch thanked BSP for the continued assistance in the sport and also its development.

“The program aims at educating young minds about the sport of tennis and squash and paves the way to find young talents to develop. We are grateful for the tremendous support from BSP,” Alarcos-Kriebisch stated.

Highly anticipated squash, tennis open

Starting from Friday evening through to Monday, over 150 entrants across 20 divisions will be showcasing their skills in the nation’s capital.

Squash tournament director, Brett Cox, described the Queen’s Birthday event as the premier squash tournament in PNG.

“We’ve got people coming in all over PNG – coming in from Lae, from Hagen, from Sepik plus we’ve got Australia and New Zealand competitors coming in,” Cox stated.

More young participants for squash, tennis

The club said squash and tennis have risen in membership since 2016.

Port Moresby Racquets Club committee member, Merlyn Alarcos, said a notable increase this year was in the age groups of 4 to 10.

“That’s very good for squash and tennis because that’s where their skills we start to groom,” she said. “We’re happy to see about 40 to 60 kids every weekend, aging from 4 to 18 years old.
