2 deaths from accident, Alotau shuts down

Four women and a child were knocked down this morning by a hired vehicle used by police from Lae.

“It was instant death for the child, who was around 5-6 years old, while one of the women passed away whilst under treatment at Alotau Health Centre at about 1-2pm,” said Milne Bay provincial police commander, George Bayagau.

“The other three are fighting for their lives.”

Bayagau said the visiting police personnel were on their way to APEC in Port Moresby.

Over a year without electricity

The Red Sea Bomana Police Barracks has been without electricity since April 2017, and proper sewerage system.

Yesterday morning the officers and their families closed off the main gate into the barracks as protest over the longstanding issues.

However, following a meeting with ACP Central and NCD, Donald Yamasombi, and senior NCD Police Members, the main gate was opened allowing movement.

Police officers have given until Monday 22nd for a proper response or else they will carry out a similar protest.

Kokopo cops found guilty

The policemen received a tip off of marijuana being cultivated at the deceased, Wesley Kenny’s block.

During the search, the deceased was severely beaten up by the officers. As a result, he sustained life threatening injuries which subsequently led to his death.

Joe Ngotngot, Eric John, Jack Bemau and David Haro pleaded not guilty when their case went for trial before Acting Judge David Susame.

They denied assaulting the deceased and inflicting injuries on him.

Evidence from prosecution did not prove a wilful murder case but that of manslaughter.

Policemen arrested for armed robbery, attempted murder

NCD Metropolitan Superintendent, Perou N’Dranou, said the pair identified as Constable Gabi Gal of Minj, Jiwaka Province, a male adult attached with Gerehu Police Station, and Constable Albert Robert, a male adult from Upper Mendi, attached to Boroko Police Station, were arrested and detained by members of the Gordon Minor Crimes Unit.

Chief Superintendent N’Dranou said Gal and Robert and a third policeman, who remains unidentified at this stage, allegedly used an unmarked vehicle to rob, assault and injure four civilians on April 19 this year.

Suspects rob shop in police getup

The armed robbery occurred at Titan Supermarket.

Eyewitnesses reported that the incident took place on Sunday, August 26th, between 5 and 6pm, whilst customers were still inside, going about their business.

Two of the suspects, in full special services uniform, were seen in the CCTV footage accosting two Asians in the shop.

They then proceeded to ransacking the cash register as well as helping themselves to flex cards and bulk smoke packets.

In a statement, Police Commissioner Gari Baki said Chief Superintendent Damaru made this known in a comprehensive brief to the Office of the Commissioner on the status of the ongoing investigations into the allegations of fraudulent payments being made to the law firm, which implicated the Prime Minister and resulted in the warrant of arrest obtained against him on 12 June 2014.

Leaders commended for citizen’s arrest

PPC Manus Chief Inspector David Yapu said the 35-year-old, from Ndranou village, was arrested and charged for the murder of Peter Tawe.

Tawe was allegedly murdered on December 12, 2006, by Karua Pomeri and Western Province man, Benny Warangu.

Warangu was charged by police in 2016 and is currently serving 16 years in hard labour at CS Ningerum in Western Province.

Pomeri was also charged with break-and-enter and stealing at a trade store at Ndranou village on July 27, 2018.

Abusive cops arrested: Baki

Baki said the two policemen (named) attached to the Police Airborne Tactical Unit (ATU) were presented by their commanding officer to the Police Internal Affairs Directorate where they were charged with assault occasioning bodily harm under the Criminal Code Act.

“They were also charged administratively with four serious disciplinary charges under the Police Force Act and suspended from active duties,” Commissioner Baki said.

The video of the assault of the teenager had gone viral on social media, causing public uproar.

POM traffic police out in force

“The road checks have effectively started on Tuesday (August 14th) and will continue until the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) ends with the Leaders’ Summit in November,” officer-in-charge of Boroko Traffic Police Senior Inspector Joseph Salle said.

He added that police traffic officers are checking vehicles for overloading, unlicensed and serious road safety issues which might trigger road accidents and loss of innocent lives.

Female driver arrested, charged

The accident took place opposite the Sir Manasupe Haus at around 4am, resulting in the deaths of three people with five receiving multiple injuries.

“The driver lost control of the vehicle allegedly whilst under the influence of alcohol. The vehicle reportedly overturned three times and claimed the lives of three people,” officer-in-charge of Boroko Traffic Unit, Senior Inspector Joseph Salle, said.
