PNG Power should diversify sources: Japan

Currently the Ramu grid power supply is inadequate to meet the demand, causing frequent blackouts to customers in Morobe, Madang and parts of the Highland grid.

Japan International Cooperation Agency, which funded the study at a cost of K8.8 million stated on its website that, “power supply to the Highlands and Momase region is unstable, interruptive and unpredictable power supply’’.

“In fact, the installation capacity for the Ramu System in terms of power generation stands at 188 MW but the actual capacity remains low at 89 MW today.”

Sirinumu dam needs continuous rain to buff up stock

Currently the water level mark is at 139 million cubic metres and depleting and when the measurement hits 100 million cubic meters hydro electricity generation will stop and only water supplier Eda Ranu will supply water to Port Moresby and surrounding areas.

The full water capacity for the dam is 340 million cubic metres.

Yanis said the electricity short fall will be met from diesel and gas turbine.

He said, the dam needs continuous rain to replenish its water stock in the water catchment area.

Don’t panic over NCD water, PNG Power says

In a media tour of Sirinumu Dam today, PNG Power water management officer Laun Medakou advised city residents that there is "no need for panic."

"It (the dam) can cater for the city for the next eight months for hydro to generate power and water,’’ he said.

The current water catchment level stands at 129 million cubic metres.

The dam capacity water level, when full, is 340 million cubic metres.

PNG Power acting chief executive officer John Yanis says the low water levels at Sirinumu Dam had resulted in the hydro power stations generating power supply at a lower capacity.

“The dam’s water level is now at 38.4% of the full spill level, which is 130 million cubic metres (MCM). The dam capacity is 340 MCM,” Yanis said in a statement.

And with the El Nino weather limiting the normal rainfall period in the country, the boss of the state owned power supplier urges consumers to save electricity.

“Electricity consumers are asked to switch off any electricity supply that is not in use, turn off lights in rooms that are empty, and use air conditioning units at 24 degrees centigrade or above.

PNG Power: Sirinumu has enough water to power city

A trip up to the dam today found that the water level of the dam has dropped from the normal level of 176 million cubic metres to around 139 million cubic meters.

This is over a period of five months.

Water management officer for PNG Power, Laun Medakou said the water levels were dropping fast.

He said they are now at 41% below full supply level.

“But we have made adjustments with load shedding to accommodate for this dry spell. We have now reduced our valves to 15 points (3.8 million cubic metres per second) from 8am-10pm and to 20 points from 10pm-8am.

Energy Workers union agrees to mediation

This decision removed a stalemate which arose when union members refused to hear the board members and executives who gathered to receive their petition.

This meeting set for tomorrow morning will be to mediate on the 17.7% salaries increment that was agreed upon as part of a previous agreement signed in 2013 between the union and executives.

Negotiations key – Mangos

And that is to agree to a date and time for round table meetings to negotiate outstanding issues.

PPL Executive Director, John Mangos said this in response to media outbursts by the General Secretary of the PNG Energy Workers Union, Santee Margies this week claiming ‘mistreatment’ by its management.

Mangos told LOOP PNG today the union did not respond to at least two formal invitations to meet and negotiate.

He also said the PPL management and the Unions are attempting to negotiate the Enterprise Bargaining Agreement which expires August 3, 2015.
