PNG media boycott APEC leaders’ arrival

Local media covering the arrivals in Port Moresby have been refused entry while the National Airport Corporation and protocol officers allowed the international media through.

The media were also refused entry yesterday whilst trying to cover the bilateral meeting between the Chinese President Xi Jinping and the other Pacific leaders.

“We waited all night. The same happened today,” journalist from a local TV station, Quintina Naime, said.

UN encourages PNG media on GBV coverage

And whether it's because of various media sensitization workshops or other reasons, the increased coverage has been noticed by UN Women and the UN AIDS.

The two bodies have been pushing for this with the mainstream media, jointly launching the Media Awards on Excellence in Reporting on GBV and HIV in 2015.

The awards, is an incentive to encourage journalists to increase their reporting on these human rights issues.

Health Minister restricts media access

In a circular number 66/2017 dated on August 15, 2017, Sir Puka said recent media statements released by health officials have created fear amongst the community.

He said such statements have not been reported out of proportion without careful thought and sufficient evidence.

"This has tarnished and defamed a lot of personal at all health levels.

"I now instruct and direct that no individual health worker or chief executive officer or management and boards at all levels shall provide any information of health matters and/or issues, to any means of media.

He is strongly urging all media organizations to uphold the revised Media Council Code of Conduct.

Media icon Bonner Tito passes on

Tito passed away on the night of May 24th at the Port Moresby General Hospital as a result of a massive heart attack.

He was 49 years old.

Tito joined Kalang Advertising in 2010 as Business Operations Manager and was recently made the Host of the FM 100 talk back show.

He directed business operations overseeing news, programs, sales, marketing, events and production.

Tito had over 17 years of experience in all facet of broadcasting and worked extensively in a wide range of administration and public relation sectors.

The Media Council of Papua New Guinea has welcomed the improved ranking from 55 in the 2016 index, but alerted the PNG Government and relevant authorities to guarantee the safety of media personnel as they continue to face the threat of assault, harassment and intimidation in the course of gathering and reporting news. 

Media challenged to take proactive approach in reporting

Kalang Advertising Limited (KAL) operations manager and current FM100 Talkback Show host Bonner Tito called on the media to report positively as practiced by radio legend the late Roger Hau’ofa.

Tito highlighted that Hau’ofa left behind his reporting and commentaries which had been all about being positive and about unity which had a big impact on the lives of the people.

“The very platform that Hau’ofa has left is the biggest challenge for us and that is to take that on and lead with it.

Oseah Philemon leaves a legacy in journalism

The passing of PNG Media icon Oseah Philemon on Christmas eve is a major shock to the industry and to many who also knew him in his profession as a journalist.

The PNG Media was still reeling earlier on in the week when another PNG Media maestro Susuve Laumaea passed on too.

The Media industry has been left to mourn the passing of two of its major pillars who upheld the  tenets of journalism from its typewriter and recorder days until today.

Wagambie unhappy with media

The case, which took place on October 16th last year, involved a drunk driver that ran his car off the road and killed four girls.

Anthony Wagambie Jnr in a statement wanted to clarify reports that the police did not give in the hand up brief (HUB) to the public prosecutors.

He also wanted to state that the defendant in the case was not acquitted rather, the matter was struck out, meaning that the case is still open.
