Perth's Lord Mayor pushes for 2026 Commonwealth Games bid

With more than 61,000 people in attendance for the Australian Football League (AFL) Grand Final at Optus Stadium this weekend, Zempilas said the Western Australia capital could now step up and position itself as a “big events city” by taking on responsibility for hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

"The 2026 Commonwealth Games is available, there is no host city for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, it’s there, it’s available," Zempilas told 9News.

“If we put our hand up in a meaningful and decisive manner, we can win the Commonwealth Games.

Man accused of Perth family massacre named

Anthony Robert Harvey, 24, is accused of killing his twin two-year-old girls, his three-year-old daughter, his partner and his mother-in-law.

Their bodies were found at the Coode St home on Sunday after Harvey visited a local police station.

The tragedy has stunned neighbours, who haven't seen the family in over a week.

"We thought they were on holiday, they haven't been there all week," Desrae Cambos told 7 News.

One neighbour told WA Today she often saw children playing in front of the house.

Perth may have more chance of joining Super League than the NRL

After beating the NRL to the punch by playing a premiership fixture on the other side of the world, English officials have revealed there had been discussions about a Perth team joining the likes of Toronto, New York, London and Toulouse in an expanded Super League.

"We've got New York and a number of other areas very interested and there are whispers from Perth that they are interested because there is a direct flight now into London," Wigan owner Ian Lenagan said.

Fijian Drua host Perth in top of the table clash

Australian researchers using silkworms to repair damaged eardrums

Who would have thought silkworms could be used to repair damaged eardrums?

A team with researchers based in Perth and Melbourne is moving towards clinical trials of a device that incorporates silk in an ear implant.

Named "ClearDrum", it looks like a contact lens, but is instead a device on which the patient's cells can grow.

Perth-based surgeon Professor Marcus Atlas said silk was the preferred choice because it was flexible.

Perth to host State of Origin in 2019

The NRL can today announce that Game Two of the 2019 State of Origin series will be played at the new Perth Stadium.

It will be the first time, barring the 1987 exhibition match in Los Angeles, an Origin match has been played outside of the eastern states of Australia.

NRL CEO Todd Greenberg said Origin was the game's showpiece event and deserved to be showcased to a new market.

"We saw Melbourne embrace State of Origin in 2015 and we expect Perth to do the same in 2019," Mr Greenberg said.
