Parole Board commended

He made these remarks when addressing the Parole board at the Bomana Correctional Service institute during a parole hearing on Thursday.

Steven says the board is doing a good job in ensuring that justice is not just done but seen to be done.

He said, it is not a right but a privilege given to prisoners after serving a third of their prison term, and so justice must be done according to law.

The Board deliberated on applications by 14 eligible applicants from Bihute prison, nine from Bundara, 14 from Bomana and 13 from Daru.  

The parole board decisions are important to detainee applicants and their families as it can ultimately have an effect on their livelihood.

Secretary for the Department of Justice and Attorney General and Chairman of the Parole Board, Dr. Eric Kwa, said by having dialogue with people on the ground through the visits allows for better understanding of their challenges.

Pistorius parole board review set for Sept. 18

Pistorius' family said in a statement Thursday that they had taken note of the date but would not comment further.

The double-amputee runner was denied early release last week after serving 10 months of his five-year manslaughter sentence for killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. 

The justice department said then the decision to release the Olympian to house arrest was taken too early.

Department spokesman Mthunzi Mhaga says Pistorius' release will have to be reviewed again because he was approved to be moved to house arrest too early.

Mthunzi says Pistorius should have served 10 months of his sentence before being considered for release. He was approved for parole in June, eight months into his sentence.
