PNG walk over Guam with 53-0 belting

PNG'S William Rew started the avalanche of tries in the first minute of play.

From then on, it was all one sided traffic as first half tries went to Jordan Tkatchenko, Hensley Peter and Henry Kalua.

PNG went to the break with a 27-0 lead.

The second half only got worse for the Guam team gave away possession through poor ball handling and penalties.

The try scoring fest continued as Stanis Susuve, Tisa Kautu Eugene Tokavai scored more points.

Peter also grabbed his second for the game.

PNG beats Tahiti in close encounter

With Tahiti ahead throughout the match, PNG bounced back in the final quarter thanks to Gabriel Elavo’s five three point shots helping PNG up with 15 points.

Tahiti took the lead in the first quarter 20-13 with the help of captain Ariitimarau Meuel and Rahitiarii Teriierooiteral and maintained their lead in the second quarter 36-34.

With their home crowd behind them, PNG pushed their way through the third quarter but were still trailing by three points as they tried to close the gap 57-54.

Nauruan wins 3 gold in one division

Itte Detenamo from the tiny Pacific Island of Nauru, won the three gold medals on offer in the +105kg division.

The super heavyweight division ended the weightlifting competition of the XV Pacific Games.

Detenamo has now won that weight division for the third consecutive time.

The Nauruan won the snatch with a weight of 167kg, clean and jerk lift of 203kg and the overall total of 370kg.

The snatch category silver  medal went to Lauititi Lui of Samoa with a lift of 160kg and Andrius Barakauskas of New Zealand won bronze lifting the bar at 145kg.

Our men's 7s double Tahiti score

PNG's Tisa Kautu scored the first try for the game.

Tahiti gained good possession and scored out wide to catch up. An unsuccessful conversion left the score at 7-5 with PNG in the lead.

PNG'S William Rew got out into a gap on the halfway line and raced away, shrugging off defenders to score under the posts.

Just before half time, Tahiti hit the same wing again and were successful,  leaving the half time score at 14-12.

But it was PNG's victory with two more tries in the second half to set up a convincing win.

Ryan Pini grabs 3rd gold

Pini clocked 50:63 sec,  faster than his qualifying time of 51.94 sec.

Finishing second was Stephane Debaere of Tahiti timed at 51:04 sec.

In third place was another Tahitian Hugo Lambert clocking in at 51.72 sec.

Samuel Seghers aims for second medal alongside Pini.

     

 

Seghers and Pini will compete in the 100m freestyle final in lanes five and two respectively.

The 20 year old did well in his heat this morning recording a time of 51.62 sec, faster than Pini's 51.94 sec.

Both swimmers finished first in their heats.

Seghers finished second in the 100m butterfly final to win silver behind Pini who won gold yesterday.

PNG aims for fourth win in men’s basketball

PNG has so far won three out of four games after losing to gold medal holders New Caledonia in their first game. The home boys defeated American Samoa, Fiji and Nauru. 

Tahiti has won all their four matches against Kiribati, Solomon Islands, silver medal holders Guam and Samoa.

This match is expected to be a showdown in front of a sellout crowd.

PNG will be led by captain Dia Muri and playmakers Wright brothers James and Allan, Gabriel Elavo and Matiineng-Iakah Leahy.

Aussie champ admires Dika and PNG

The Australian weightlifter told Loop PNG that it is her "first time to win against her (Dika)’’.

Yamasaki is the new 53kg Pacific Games champion after winning two gold medals and PNG golden girl Dika Toua won one.

Dika failed to lift a bar in the snatch, shocking the nation of fans.

The 53kg champion said she did not see Dika's lift as she was concentrating on her own lift.

"I was sad for Dika at the same time," referring to Dika's failure to make a lift in the snatch.

Gold for Kiribati

Two more gold medals are on offer in the 105kg division in the Pacific Games weightlifting final day.

Zac Gregurevic (Australia) won silver and Rory Taylor (New Zealand) settled for bronze in the snatch.

PNG lone entrant Geshe Heni managed to lift only 80kg in the snatch.
