Pacific digital tax system to be trialled in Solomons

The Pacific Financial Inclusion Programme's Abigail Chang says tax departments in the region still use manual processes to receive paper tax returns.

Ms Chang said the new digital system would provide more payment options and reduce cash handling.

n Solomon Islands it is estimated the system could be used by more than 123,000 employees, 200 corporate taxpayers and about 3,600 small businesses.

The programme has provided a grant of more than $US450,000 for the system to be installed in the Solomons.

New banking program for Highlands region

The first-of-its-kind program has been announced by Westpac, the Pacific Financial Inclusion Program (PFIP) and the Australian Government.

Choice Wantok is a new low-cost banking option specifically developed to suit people in the Highlands, an area where most people have never been able to access even basic banking services. 

Central to Choice Wantok will be a new Innovation Hub set up at Mount Hagen, bringing the latest technology to the Highlands and allowing Westpac to test ideas and tailor its services to meet the specific needs of remote communities.
