Track and field to introduce prize money at Olympics

The move, announced on Wednesday 10 April, is a symbolic break with the amateur part of the Olympics in some of the games’ most-watched events.

Endorsement Of Team PNG Pending

While the endorsement of the final team is pending, the top management for Team PNG has been appointed. The JC is the committee under the PNG Olympic Committee (PNGOC) that deliberates and endorses sports and their top athletes to take part as Team PNG in the Olympics, Commonwealth and Pacific Games.

Targeted sports that will represent Papua New Guinea at the 2022 Pacific Mini Games in Saipan, Northern Mariana Island, scheduled for June 17th to 25th 2022 are Athletics, Beach Volleyball, Golf, Tennis, Va’a and weightlifting.

Athletes representing PNG are Ryan Maskelyn and Judith Meauri in swimming, both in their respective events, Dika Toua and Morea Baru, also in their respective weight category and divisions, John Ume in boxing in his weight category of 57 – 63kg, Rellie Kaputin in athletics and Sailing duo Rose Lee Numa and Teariki Lee Numa.

Uncertainty remains for boxers ahead of Olympics

The International Olympic Committee has launched an inquiry into the finances and governance of AIBA, which has been in turmoil for years, and warned that it could miss out on Tokyo next year.

The IOC said that it was aiming to present the report to its executive board in May but AIBA said it had expected the investigation to be completed by now and that it was time to wrap up the inquiry and move forward.

Kenny eyes Olympics landmark in Tokyo

The 29-year-old announced on Tuesday that he will return to cycling at the Revolution Series in Manchester next January as he continues his bid to become Great Britain's most successful Olympian. 

Kenny, who took time off after winning three golds at Rio 2016 and married fellow cyclist Laura Trott before the pair had a child, is level with the legendary Chris Hoy on six podium-topping finishes at the Games.

James likes 3-on-3 in Olympics

The short-sided format was added to the Olympic schedule last week, along with mixed relay races on the track and in the pool and BMX Freestyle.

Though happy with the move, it does not mean the Cleveland Cavaliers star will represent Team USA in Tokyo.

"I think it's great for basketball," James is quoted by ESPN. "For us to be able to add another category to the Olympics, another basketball category, I think it's pretty great.

"I'm not very good in a three-on-three thing, I'm more of a five-on-five guy.

Pacific’s top swimmer on a campaign role

Currently back home in PNG and helping out the family business, Pini has opened a new chapter in his life following his retirement from the pool after Rio.

“It’s very different from being in the pool to sitting behind the desk but I enjoy it and get to work alongside my brothers,” said Pini.

Currently the athlete’s representative in the Oceania Olympic Committee (OOC) Pini travels around the Pacific region gauging views from athletes and presenting those views to the Pacific Games Council Board which in turn proceeds to the OOC.

Kuwait’s sporting crisis has deepened today after the Public Sports Authority (PSA) dissolved the country’s National Olympic Committee (NOC) and Football Association (KFA) for alleged financial irregularities.
