Policeman gets four years for official corruption

Probationary Constable Jonathan Kara, 27, of Kelua 2, Western Highlands Province, was sentenced on July 3 by Justice Nicholas Miviri at the Waigani National Court in Port Moresby.

Kara was found guilty under section 87 (1) and 138 (a) of the PNG Criminal Code respectively. In Feb 2017, Moses Andia, 30, of Tambul Western Highlands Province was arrested and detained at the Gordon police cells for insulting a person.

Police warned of illegal activities

This warning comes after a probationary constable was arrested in March for official corruption in releasing suspects from Gordons police cells.

The cop identified as 27 year old, Jonathan Kari from Western Highlands was charged with official corruption after investigations found that he released the two suspects from the cells after they had given him money.

Meantime, on the 3rd of July he was found guilty and sentenced to four years hard labour in prison.

Senior Public servant in Manus arrested

Paso Pohei, the Deputy Administrator for Economic and Technical Service in the Manus Provincial Administration was arrested by members of the National Fraud and Anti-Corruption Directorate in Manus on Wednesday.

The 55-year old from Buyang village in the Tetidu LLG was arrested following complaints from the provincial administration to police.

Pohei was later released on K1,000 police bail. He is expected to appear at the Lorengau Committal Court next week Wednesday.
