Broncos make big call on Staggs; Eels star returns after long lay-off: NRL trials Week 1 Teams

While some clubs use trials to give squad players game time and try out new combinations, a whole host of new signings will be eager to run out for their new clubs.

Nicho Hynes and Dale Finucane are yet to appear in a Sharks jersey, while Matt Burton, Tevita Pangai Jnr and Josh Addo-Carr will be itching to don the famous Bulldogs colours.

So far only the Storm, Cowboys, Bulldogs and Rabbitohs have confirmed their teams for this weekend’s games.

Why NRL trials are more important than ever

The unprecedented number of transfers during the summer months, particularly among big-name playmakers, is why pre-season matches are more significant than previous years.

While only the World Club Challenge between Melbourne Storm and Leeds at AAMI Park and the international double-header at ANZ Stadium - featuring the St George Illawarra Dragons and South Sydney Rabbitohs - attracted NRL-sized crowds, the other six trials were still of value to the clubs.

NRL trials week one injury update: Lussick to miss 4-6 weeks

Scans revealed Lussick suffered a high ankle sprain, but no fracture, which will see he sidelined for between four and six weeks.

His rehabilitation is already underway with Sea Eagles medical staff.

In other injury news from the opening weekend of the pre-season, Storm fullback Billy Slater isn't expected to be in doubt for round one despite coming off early in his team's World Club Challenge win over Leeds.
