Police Launch Festive Operation in South Bougainville

Inspector John Popui, Commander of Buin Police Station, stressed the importance of adhering to traffic rules, particularly for vehicle owners and drivers.

Police checks have been implemented as part of the operation, leading to a full Buin police lockup unable to accommodate more lawbreakers.

Inspector Popui urgently called on vehicle owners to verify the registration and roadworthiness of their vehicles before hitting the public roads.

Vabukori runs curfew

The village, consisting of three areas, gathered residents to participate in the program.

The curfew aims to restrict drunk and disorderly behaviour.

Many young men and a few women are volunteering to run the curfews, which include roadblocks for vehicle checking.

The 8pm shift is run by children under 16 years of age while the midnight shift is for older people.

Deputy Chairman of the Vabukori Village Court, Michael Ikavape, said this is a first of its kind in the community and has so far brought peace during the festive period.

O’Neill positive for this season

“And hopefully everyone has a very safe new year and I want to stress do it in a very orderly manner.

“We want to see you next year; we hear a lot of accidents happen during Christmas and New Year.

He gave an overview of the country thus far stating some of the challenges his government has faced against these backdrops.

“ In 2014, 15 we had a long eight months of drought, we’ve created a lot of stress in our business community and of course our own people.

New Year delayed by one second

The extra second will occur as clocks strike midnight and a time of 23:59:60 will be recorded, delaying 2017 momentarily.

A leap second last occurred in June 2015 and this will be the 27th time it has occurred.

The change is required because standard time lags behind atomic clocks.

The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) - responsible for the UK's national time scale - uses the atomic clock to provide a stable and continuous timescale.

Along with other clocks across the globe, it provides the world with its coordinated universal time.
