Investigation on New Year shooting incident ongoing

Investigators are still waiting for PNGDF to come forward with the New Year’s duty roster operations list which consists of names of the officers who were on duty during New Year.

NCDC Metropolitan Superintendent Ben Turi says he had sent word to them reminding them of the list last Thursday but there hasn’t been any response since then.

“We cannot do our job if they do not cooperate with us by giving us the names of the soldiers involved in the New Year shootout.”

New Boroko cells still to pass health inspections

This is the first time after a while in which the cells blocks have been renovated since the facility was first built.

NCDC Metropolitan Superintendent Ben Turi during the tour this morning said until the holding cells are given the approval by the inspectors, the cells will be open for occupation by inmates.

The holding cells have had major maintenance and refurbishment since last year when it was condemned by the NCDC health inspections.

Environmental Health Senior Inspector Mathew Laba says since last year, the cell blocks have seen an immense improvement.

Turi urges policewomen to step up

This came after he announced the first two quarterly year reports on Friday during a farewell parade at Boroko Police Station.

For the first quarter of the year, reaching back almost three years, 40 discipline charges were reported, which included the current reports.

The second quarter saw the number of charges drop from 40 to 35, relating to discipline.

Turi believes that in the next two quarters, the number would have dropped further.

Of the 75 charges, 15 officers were dismissed; one was a commissioning officer while the rest are from other ranks.

Police presence to increase in NCD

NCDC Metropolitan Superintendent Ben Turi told Loop PNG that manpower for roadblocks and checks have increased and some parts of the city might seem congested at nights.

Vehicles are advised to stop at these checkpoints for the police to give a quick run-down check on their vehicles before they can pass.

“I stress again that all vehicles must stop at these checkpoints,” says Turi.

Turi says there will also be roadblocks put up in certain streets where some vehicles like to take to escape police checks.

NCD police conduct roadblocks

Loop PNG caught up with some police officers who were doing their routine checks at Six Mile- Five Mile roundabout and the new road leading to Erima last night.

Officers at the scene said, they have been searching every passing vehicle since the beginning of this week.

These road blocks and vehicle checks will continue up until the FIFA games next month.

Police officers arrested for ignoring Baki’s warnings

Early this year, Baki had advised officers to ensure that order and justice prevails in the force. However, some officers chose to overlook his words.

NCDC Metropolitan Superintendent Ben Turi said: “Recently, another two officers were arrested and charged by the Criminal Investigative Division (CID)”.

One was arrested for being drunk and being disorderly in public, says Turi.

He adds that getting bribes for the release of suspects will not be tolerated as well as this will call for termination and dismissal from the constabulary.

Support grand final in a fair way: Turi

NCDC Metropolitan Superintendent Ben Turi says the police will be on watch for anyone caught misbehaving.

“Rugby league fanatics are advised to stay in their homes and watch the NRL grand final on television,” Turi stresses.

“We urge that to be on the safe side, you stay in the comfort of your own homes and watch the NRL grand finale.”
