Plants invest more in chemical defense at higher altitudes, PNG study finds

Contrary to the idea that plants are immobile and therefore defenseless against animals and fungi that feed on them, they have long developed a vast arsenal of physical and chemical defense mechanisms to protect them wherever they grow.

In fact, it is well-known among ecologists that the different abilities of plants to protect themselves from their herbivores determines the numbers and types of these herbivores found on certain plants, thus affecting animal species diversity in a given area.

Mountain cabin stole hearts at DWU expo

The annual Liklik Diwai expo was hosted by Divine Word University in Madang on Friday, September 23.

As exhibited at the expo, Snow Pass is an eco-lodge settled at 2,200m on a ridge top bordering three provinces, namely Eastern Highlands, Chimbu and Jiwaka.

The eco-lodge specialises in offering eco-tourism products and services such as tracking, bird watching, star gazing, culture and the rich flora and faunas.

Snow Pass Eco-Lodge managing director Vincent Kumura said the expo was a success and it was satisfying to see the public taking interest in eco-tourism.

Upper Bundi rural schools receive 3,000 library books

Eight schools including two primary and six elementary schools received the much needed library books presented by Digicel PNG Foundation Men of Honour recipient  Vincent Kumura.

Kumura is also a promoter for eco-tourism and the Managing Director of the Snow Pass Eco-Lodge (SPEL) in Bundi, Eastern Highlands Province.

The boxes of books were airlifted to Yandera and Snow Pass Primary School and six other elementary schools.
