Justification needed for new minimum wage determination

Minister Manase said this is in response to calls for a new minimum wage determination to be set.

He said a new determination cannot be made unless there is proper justification.

In a media conference over the weekend, the Minister said he was informed of calls from worker representative bodies requesting for a new determination to be made to the minimum wage.

The last minimum wages determination was back in 2014, with the current rate set at K3.50.

Minister Manase said a new determination can only be made once there is sufficient validation.

Most jobs given to expatriates: Minister

He says the number of graduates is increasing every year with no jobs because they are given to expatriates coming into the country.

The Department of Labour and Industrial Relations have gone into reviewing job classifications in the country.

Minister Kipefa said: “For the past few years, the flood gates were open for non-citizens to pick up any job they want to pick in this country but this must stop one way or the other.

He was nominated among 15 other intending candidates who will race against against the incumbent sitting MP and Minister for Labour and Industrial Relations Minister Benjaman Poponawa who has held the seat for the last 10 years.

In his policy speech he stressed that Tambul Nebilyer for the last 10 years had not seen any change.

He said if he is elected into Parliament, his first job is to review and build new roads and bridges for the people to have access to the outside world.
