Boy dies after being held at Mexico-US border

It is the second time this month an immigrant child has died while being detained after crossing the US-Mexico border.

The previous instance saw a seven-year-old girl, also from Guatemala, die hours after being taken into custody.

US officials said she had tried to cross the Mexico-US border illegally with her family.

The Guatemalan girl, who authorities there named as Jakeline Caal, died of dehydration and shock, the Washington Post reported. Border officials were quoted as saying she had not had food or water for several days.

Pope slammed for likening refugee centers to 'concentration camps'

"I don't know if he was able to get out of that concentration camp, because the refugee camps -- many -- are concentration (camps), because they are so crowded with people," the Pope said in Italian.

The AJC issued a statement asking the pontiff to reconsider his "regrettable" choice of words.

"The conditions in which migrants are currently living in some European countries may well be difficult, and deserve still greater international attention, but concentration camps they certainly are not," said AJC CEO David Harris.

Marcelle O'Brien was sent to a home in Pinjarra, western Australia, run by the Fairbridge Society, at the age of four.

But Fairbridge said it would not be in her "best interests", the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse heard.

Mrs O'Brien said she suffered "mental cruelty" and "sadistic" treatment at the home where she was forced to do "slave labour".

She was molested by her school's deputy principal and caned, the hearing was told.

Romanian PM criticizes Hungary for fence plan

Victor Ponta said Tuesday on his Facebook page that "barbed wire, aggressive laws, prison and brutality will not resolve problems."

Ponta added on Antena 3 television that he was "horrified" to think about what to do "if Hungarian troops begin to shoot or kill children and women."

He said the fence plans show that Hungary "in the heart of Europe, has political decision makers which are no better than those in Syria, Libya or other countries that refugees flee from."
