Papua New Guinea heads into the last week of the long tiring eight weeks of campaign period, and the final week is expected to be blazing with noise.

Polling for the 2017 National Elections will start on Saturday 24 June, a day after completion of the campaign period.  

Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jnr said police will carry out awareness during the event to educate the voters.

Lae Police receive timely Easter blessing

“After observing how dangerous it has been for Police to do vehicles checks at night, I went about to obtain quotations for portable blue lights.

“This was to enable my suburban Police stations to conduct random roadblocks at night, to check on traffic offences, suspicious persons travelling in vehicles and deter movement of stolen motor vehicles.

“Quote was collected from Niugini Electrical Lae for 20 pieces, valued at K12,100.

Student dead, several injured in school brawl

Classes were suspended due to the incident as Police stepped up its presence at the school ensuring the safe passage of students leaving the school grounds.

Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jr confirmed that a fight broke out at the school at around 10am where the male student was stabbed multiple times and was rushed to Angau Memorial Hospital but unfortunately died.

Wagambie said police were alerted and proceeded immediately to the school and dispersed the students.

A suspect armed with a homemade gun was pursued on foot but managed to escape.

Robbery of hotel an ‘inside job’

It was the talk of the city today that Lae International Hotel, situated at 4th Street, had been robbed following the long weekend celebrations of the country’s 41st Independence anniversary.

Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jnr said five suspects had walked into the hotel’s accounts section, held up its staff and made off with the cash in a waiting brown tenth seater.

The police boss said the incident happened between 10am and 10.30am; it happened within the space of five minutes.
