Metropolitan Superintendent, Chris Kunyanban, described the young Sepik man as a “habitual break-and-enter suspect”.

Lae police found his body at the back of CASA Hardware, at Snackbar, on Monday August 10^th.

Kunyanban said the deceased’s modus operandi involves targeting two buildings at one time.

“Investigation is still underway to confirm the cause of death and also to see what had transpired that night in the other building,” stated Kunyanban.

“We also found out that the same guy entered Big Rooster before he went over to CASA.”

Metropolitan Superintendent, Chris Kunyanban, said this was a factor behind a recent escape from the cells.

Kunyanban said detainees recently cut through the Lae holding cells fence and escaped when they were taken out to have their shower.

And while the fence has been fixed, the problem still remains; and that is overcrowding.

Kunyanban said while those who escaped were held for minor crimes, the cells also have people who have been remanded as well as convicted prisoners.

Metropolitan superintendent, Anthony Wagambie Jnr, clarified that this does not include residential areas and established markets that trade betelnut.

“We are seeking your opinion if we should ban this at Top Town, Eriku shopping centre, bus stops and other public areas,” he said.

“We continue to have street sales because there is a market for it, meaning people continue to buy betelnut and cigarettes from these street vendors. If people stop buying then there would not be a reason for them to sell.

The NCD metropolitan superintendent made this statement following numerous missing persons posts on Facebook.

Port Moresby residents have been urged to refrain from inciting fear after several individuals took to social media in recent weeks to post about missing family members or friends without filing reports with police, or in some cases, posting without exhausting all avenues.

This morning, the NCD metropolitan superintendent conducted an inspection at the Six-Mile Police Station.

The Met Supt stressed on tidiness at the parade, rebuking officers with unpolished shoes, buai-stained teeth and those who were not wearing the police-issued beret. He even threw away an officer’s baseball cap.

Of the three ten seaters, one has been allocated to the brand new Malahang Police Station whilst the other two to Sector Response Units 102 and 103.

The Sector Response Unit, which is just over a year old now, has four police vehicles; the first two were donated by the ICTSI in partnership with the office of Member for Lae last year.

Metropolitan superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jnr had nothing but praise for the community in PNG’s second largest city.

The response time for police in Lae is between five to ten minutes.

Metropolitan superintendent Wagambie Jnr says they have adjusted their policing to meet the community’s needs, and this has worked wonders for him and his team.

“We have implemented our strategies in terms of initiatives like the toll free number, sector patrol and also supporting our existing police units,” he said.

Police are concerned the woman is deliberately attempting to stall an investigation into the girl’s alleged abuse at the hands of a suspect who has a criminal past.

In a statement, Metropolitan Superintendent, Perou N’Dranou, said the man was arrested, “this time for abusing a minor inside his car along Toliman circuit, Gerehu”.

“The suspect in this case is Sailas Hombie, commonly known as ‘Alfie’, 43 years old of Kuimbuan, East Sepik Province.

Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’Dranou’s statement follows the re-arrest of CS convict, Paul Pisa, at the Waigani courthouse last Thursday.

Police were not aware of the leave of absence granted to Pisa from the Correctional Service facility at Bomana.

This was until they arrested him and brought him back to Bomana only to find out from CS officers that he was granted a LOA.

N’Dranou said if prisoners of such are out on a leave of absence, police should be made informed as these persons are convicted prisoners and are a threat to the general public.

Metropolitan Superintendent, Ben Turi, said since last Thursday, 10 deaths have been reported to police.

Details of the deaths vary as all eight men and two women were killed at different times and at different locations in the city.

Apart from two people killed in an election-related incident at Vadavada last weekend, other deaths were related to domestic arguments and ethnic clashes.
