Mendi flights suspended

“This is due to advice from National Airports Corporation that they have had to close the airport due to public intrusions onto the runway, damage to airport facilities and threats to NAC staff,” the firm said in a statement.

Flights PX 860/861 on Sunday 08th, 15th and 22nd October have been suspended while the airline closely monitors the situation.

“If the airport becomes available for operations prior to these dates, Link PNG will re-open these flights for sales.

Link PNG to resume flights to Wapenamanda

Link PNG’s General Manager, Bruce Alabaster said the services to Wapenamanda have been temporarily suspended since June this year, due to obstruction of trees at the runway approach paths.

Alabaster said: “The trees have been cut,  and we can confirm the runway approach paths are clear. Our first flight for the resumption of operations to Wapenamanda is scheduled for next Tuesday.”

Successful airlifting of WNB exam papers

Last week saw a successful airlifting of examination papers for grades 10 and 12 to West New Britain Province.

Air Niugini Chief Executive Officer Simon Foo said the use of the DHC-8 Combi aircraft allows the airline to move larger amounts of cargo at one time, and also to uplift bulky cargo that would not otherwise fit on other commercial flights.

“Whilst our Fokker aircraft are a great cargo solution in that they can carry over one ton of cargo as well as 100 passengers, the ‘Combi’ flights are proving to be an excellent addition to our capability,” Foo said.

The Chairman of Air Niugini and Link PNG, Sir Frederick Reiher, welcomed the new General Manager today.  He said with Alabaster’s 25 years experience in the aviation industry, the board and management are confident he will take the airline forward in its second year of operation.

Link PNG suspends flights to Oro

A statement released this afternoon says the airline’s Popondetta flights for this afternoon and tomorrow morning have been suspended.

“The decision to suspend flights was made following reports that a wet crossing or temporary passage enabling vehicles to safely cross the river has washed away by the heavy rains last night.”

“Flight PX 856 this afternoon and PX 852 scheduled for tomorrow morning have been suspended. The operations of PX 856/857 scheduled for tomorrow afternoon will depend on whether or not the flood continues.”

Hayfield airstrip still needs upgrading

This is one of the proposed routes for the state owned subsidiary of Air Niugini to land in East Sepik the Province.

Link PNG acting general manager Marco McConnell told Loop PNG that a lot of work is still needed for the airstrip to meet standard and criteria for flight operations.     

“A lot of work had to go into that like, feasibility studies, surveys, markets in that area for approvals.”

He added that airport authorities will have to certify the airstrip before planes can land.  

Continuous tribal fights disrupt flights to Tari

This has caused Link PNG to temporarily suspend all its flights to Tari airport, Southern Highlands as of Wednesday Feb 3, 2015.

However Link PNG in a statement said the company is closely monitoring the situation and will advise as to when the flights will resume.

Link PNG regret the inconvenience caused, however the situation is beyond their control.

Link PNG operates four weekly flights to Tari, every Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

It is a subsidiary company of Air Niugini Limited.
