Police toll free challenge outlined

Lae metropolitan superintendent, Chris Kunyanban, said the number 7090 3300 is currently a standalone line, which means officers can answer only one call at a time.

Chief Superintendent Kunyanban urged Lae residents to understand and be patient with them, adding this is only one of the many hurdles they face when enforcing law and order in the city.

He was responding to complaints of calls not getting through, which leads to delayed police response.

“It’s one of our challenges as well in terms of toll free,” stated Chief Superintendent Kunyanban.

Lae police commend MP

Metropolitan superintendent, Anthony Wagambie Jnr, said this is the first-of-its-kind to Lae Police from a Member of Parliament.

Of the three ten seaters, one has been allocated to the brand new Malahang Police Station whilst the other two to Sector Response Units 102 and 103.

The Sector Response Unit, which is just over a year old now, has four police vehicles; the first two were donated by the ICTSI in partnership with the office of Member for Lae last year.

Gaps in police response, perpetrators walk free: Sergeant

The 26 year veteran in the police force discovered that this is due to gaps in the police response to family and sexual violence.

On many occasions cases did not make it through to prosecution in court. This could be for reasons such as the lack of correctly filled out paperwork or the absence of crucial documentation, such as medical reports. This results in further distress on survivors and frustration for police officers and lawyers.

However, positive changes are underway.

Getaway Vehicle Involved in Accident

Metropolitan Superintendent Anthony Wagambie Jr said five suspects had held up occupants of a fifth element just outside the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium at around 4:30 pm and they made their getaway towards China Town and onto the backroad where they met their fate at Bumayong market.

Mr Wagambie said the incident was reported to a police patrol unit twenty minutes later by the victim. The patrol unit later alerted the Law police.

Lae Police hunt child molester

Lae Metropolitan police commander Anthony Wagambie says that the victim unfortunately died from the injuries caused by the sexual molestation she was subjected to.

The matter was reported to police earlier last month after the mother brought the baby to Angau hospital where it was found that the child had bruising to her private parts.

It was reported to police by the mother that the child had been sexually molested by a male relative from October 2015 to January 14th this year.
