George Brown Day celebrated in Kimbe

The church was packed as United Church followers congregated from three church circuits in the region.

George Brown was a Methodist missionary born in England but migrated to New Zealand in 1855. In 1874-75, he travelled in Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania and New Zealand, canvassing support. He then visited Fiji and Samoa for volunteer missionaries then later arrived in New Britain.

In 1878, New Britain locals allegedly murdered and ate a Fijian missionary and three teachers but this did not deter Brown from his mission.

Doctors become victims of weekend getaway in Kimbe

Constable Martin Vitolo told Loop PNG that they (doctors) have file a complaint at the Kimbe police station along with quotation from the damages done to their  vehicle.

He said police will be carrying out their investigations into the matter today or tomorrow.

A female doctor who wanted to remain anonymous because of safety reasons told Loop PNG that they were attacked by the whole community at Kumbango after swimming in the river near the compound.

​Youth chopped to death, houses burnt in retaliation

The Kimbe Grammar School, Karl Hesse Primary and St. Monica’s Elementary School in the residential area of Section 21 had their classes disrupted after a group of men retaliated to the killing.

The deceased, from Sepik and WNB parentage, was chopped to death at Section 21 on June 26. This occurred in front of the tucker shops at the 7th street, leading to what is known as Wabag City.

The perpetrator, believed to be from Enga Province, has fled and police are appealing to the public to bring the person to the Kimbe Police Station for charges to be laid.

PNG Games venues see delay in funding

Nirvani Civil Construction company in Kimbe is doing the ground work for the venues with most of the sporting areas  being graded and marked including drainage and town roads.

However, completion of some of the games venues have run behind targets due to delay of funds from the legally responsible offices and committees.

Security guard nabbed with marijuana package

Provincial Police Commander Jim Namora says the package had come unaccompanied from the flight and a Guard Dog Security officer had gone in to pick up the package and was apprehended while on his way out with it.

PPC Namora says police had received a tip off from someone who wished to remain anonymous and was waiting in the airport terminal to see who the recipient of the package was.

Heavy rains hit Kimbe

Last week’s weather was unpredictable with showers and fine days.

This morning, the heavens opened with flash floods evident everywhere.

It could be a wet Easter period for the Province if the rains continue.     

WNB prepares to host PNG Games in November

Contractor Nivani Limited have started late last year clearing areas selected for the games, which will be Kulungi, Kapore, Hoskins as satellite venues while the main stadium will be at Kimbe town.

Construction work on the ground at this time involves levelling, drainage, fencing and stadium construction.

The stadium will hold a capacity of 3500 people and is now the main focus of the contractor to complete.

Nivani Limited has 7 months to complete all works. 

Kimbe grinds to a standstill over killing

Last week, 7 young men from Section 21 d attempted to rob the Century Mart shop opposite Nivani.

One robber shot dead a security guard as the gang was exiting the building.

Truckloads of Bakovi people moved into town and demanded the criminals be identified and brought into the Police Station immediately.

Most schools, business houses and offices were closed yesterday in fear of riots.

Among the 6 petition points, they demanded for all settlements around the vicinity of the town and especially section 21, be removed.

Team Sepik steps up for Kimbe PNG Games

Prior to the provincial games held in November last year, the team had identified a number of potential players and is now ready to reduce their numbers to travel.

East Sepik Grass Roots Games Chairman Clarence Hukahu told PNG Loop they will have three stages of trimming which will coincide with the school holidays.

“Many of our potential reps are students, who are going to participate in the trial games. That is why we will have the squad trial matches during the three school term breaks to finalise our travel squad,” Hukahu said.

Notice Boards go up for PNG Games

The notice boards will contain public draws, game fixtures, timings and other sporting events for the upcoming PNG games tournament.

This contract awarded through the WNB Technical Services Department was awarded to Uvanta Construction, a locally based firm.

It is not immediately known how much the contrails worth.

Kimbe has begun preparation for the PNG Games later in the year.
