Bank robberies reflect on security companies

And a concerted effort by these two bodies is needed to assure customers that their monies are safe.

Criminal court judge, Panuel Mogish made these remarks today when sentencing Thomas Karo, a man who received stolen properties of K322,660 as his share for transporting part of the proceeds from the robbery to five years in jail.  

He said the management of the two agencies involved in what he described as “the biggest robbery in the country” calls for an immediate review of its processes to avoid future mishaps.

Robbery accessory gets five year sentence

Justice Panuel Mogish of the Waigani National Court sentenced 40- year- old Thomas Karo, of Aroma, Central Province to serve a term of 11 years in jail.

He later dedicated time spend in remand (three years, three months, one week and two days) from the sentence and further suspended two years for Karo to be placed on a two year good behaviour bond after he is released from custody. 

He said this case is not where sentence will be wholly suspended ordering Karo to serve  five years, eight months, two weeks and five days at the Bomana jail.

7-year sentence for receiving G4S robbery money

On August 25, 2015, Ricky Antio pleaded guilty before the Waigani National Court to receiving K1,500 stolen cash monies.

He was sentenced by Justice Panuel Mogish to 11 years’ imprisonment with hard labour this week.

Antio spent 11 months in remand at Bomana before he was released on National Court bail on Sept 26, 2014.

The court deducted those 11 months spent in remand from the head sentence of 11 years, leaving Antio with 10 years, one month.

Justice Mogish further ordered 3 years to be suspended from that remaining 10 years – one month jail time.

UPNG journalism students observe court sitting

It’s an exercise the UPNG Journalism and Public Relations strand has taken to help its third year News Coverage students get their minds back in school through practical engagement. This was after classes resumed following the boycott and student unrest.

Tutor and trip coordinator, Joycelyn Mark, said the students’ visit on Friday to the Bomana National Court was part of the theory component of the course and more visits will be done during the semester.

57yo gets 23 years for killing man over pig

Allan Aiso was convicted by the Bomana National Court on Oct 24 for the murder of George Evi on May 5, 2015, at Aipeana village, Kairuku district.

He was found guilty of hurling a spear-knife at Evi’s chest after he found him standing next to his dead pig in the garden.

Justice Panuel Mogish, sentencing him to 25 years’ imprisonment this week, deducted one year, six months from that sentence. This was due to time he spent in remand at Bomana. Aiso will now serve a remaining 23 years and six months in prison.

Defendant in airport heist granted bail

35-year-old Jeremiah Kundi was allowed K1000 bail today after he was remanded at Bomana.

He was arrested on information or allegations made by an accomplice involved in the airport robbery of Nov 3, where K1.2m was stolen from Tropic Air.

He was charged with robbery on allegations he aided two other accomplice by providing them with a pistol used in the robbery.

Judge: Soldiers should be given proper dismissal

Justice Mogish on Saturday sentenced the 12 to imprisonment terms ranging from three years to a year however suspended all their terms because the Government and PNGDF failed to sustain their operation in Moro such led them to engage in other activities to sustain their operation which led to mutiny.

“I would recommend the soldiers be given opportunity to leave the Defense Force in accordance with the Defense Act rather than being dishonorably discharged.  This is a matter for the Commander of the PNGDF to consider.

Parker case update: Evidence undergoing DNA tests

Parker went before Justice Panuel Mogish on Wednesday where the state gave an update on the progress of the DNA test, which is being conducted by the City Mobile Medical Services. They are testing the shirt which was allegedly used by Parker to clean the blood of the late Lapan Nason at his Port Moresby home on Saturday, June 6, 2015.

The state informed the National Court that the medical service indicated that DNA tests usually take two weeks, but it can take longer, depending on the type of material used.

Elderly woman assaulted over land dispute

It is a source of disharmony and people should take the matter up with local authorities. Justice Panuel Mogish recently made the remarks after a Rigo man attacked an old woman.

Justice Mogish told Rawali Geno that elderly people must be treated with respect and attacking a defenseless and vulnerable woman was uncalled for, even though she uprooted plants on a disputed land.

“This woman is related to you. I would strongly urge parties to solve the land dispute before someone is killed and seriously injured.

Rape, an element of disrespect, says Judge

Justice Panuel Mogish, in sentencing a man last week to 22 years in prison over the sexual assault of two teenagers, said rape is a crime of violence on a female person’s body.

“It is a degrading offense that involves the sexual violation of a person’s dignity. At its highest, it (rape) portrays elements of disrespect and inequality towards a woman,” he said.

Justice Mogish said women become objects of sex, and sex alone, to men like the offender, who prey upon them and rape them.
