Independence Day

These sentiments were shared by one of PNG’s iconic leaders, Sir Julius Chan, in commemorating the country’s 43^rd Independence.

Sir Julius said unity happens when equals come together for a common purpose.

Unity in PNG should be between the national government and provinces that are equal and have a strong relationship as partners and not a relationship between a master and servant.

Sir Julius re-emphasised the importance of autonomy and that through this partnership and in the true essence of unity, more power should be given to the provinces.

Fifty climbers successfully reached the summit of the highest mountain in Papua New Guinea at 6am on Independence Day.

Mt Wilhelm summit is 4,509m high and it is located among spike range peaks in the northeast between Madang and Western Highlands provinces.

The climbers consisted of students, school teachers, guardians and parents.

The trekkers started their journey up the mountain in the morning of Thursday, September 15 and reached the summit at 6am on Independence Day.

The National Capital District Commission (NCDC) have organised activities including a street festival, live concert, canoe race, community festival at  Nine-Mile and cultural activities at Jack Pidik Park.

The three days street and dance festival from September 15-17 will be held for the first time in PNG at the Paga Hill ring road comprising of music, arts and crafts while the canoe race will take place at Ela Beach.

The Kremlin said Putin noted in the telegram Saturday that despite the differences between the two countries, their relations remain important for global stability and security.

"Putin expressed confidence that by building a dialogue based on the principles of equality and mutual respect for each other's interests, Russia and the United States are able to find solutions to the most complex international problems and effectively counter global threats and challenges," the Kremlin said.
