Being captain was a challenge - Zeming

The 26 year old has represented the Hunters over two seasons and 41 games in the Intrust Super Cup, scoring 13 tries and kicked 134 conversions.

He also played for PNG in the 2014 Prime Ministers 13, the test match against Tonga in 2014, the test match against Fiji in 2014 and the 2015 Pacific Games rugby league nines competition.

Zeming said it was a huge responsibility but he was able to stay calm and control the team with the help of the coaching staff.

Brave Hunters downed by Panthers

The home team lost to New South Wales Cup team Penrith Panthers 20-12 in front of a bumper crowd of over 15 000 people.

 Following the official opening of the NFS by Prime Minister Peter O'Neill, Panthers opened the score board with the first try through Leilani Latu 15 minutes into the game.

A successful conversion took them to lead 6-0.

Hunters fought back to score their first try through Adex Wera five minutes to half time followed by an unsuccessful conversion 6-4.

Panthers extended the lead through a try seconds to half time from Josh Hall.

Peter O'Neill officially opens National Stadium

O'Neill officially kicked off the first match to be played in the new stadium turf in front of a sell out crowd of over 15000 people.

The match is underway between SP Hunters and Penrith Panthers.

Marum set to get chance to coach PNG Kumuls

Mal Meninga was announced as the new Australian head coach during week, despite still being contracted to PNG Rugby League until the 2017 World Cup.

PNG Rugby League CEO, Bob Cutmore, says there have been informal discussions over the past month about who could replace Meninga, if he accepted the Kangaroos job.

He says his personal preference would be to appoint a Papua New Guinean coach and surround him with experienced mentors.

 

Blackhawks leading 14-6 over Hunters at halftime

From the kick off, the Blackhawks showed they meant business forcing a line drop out in their first set of play.

The Blackhawks spread the ball out wide quickly creating an overlap for to Zac Santo to score the first try the game after only three minutes.

Former NRL player, Robert Lui could not add the extras with his kick sailing wide.

Right from the restart, the Blackhawks caught the Hunters defence when they attacked the blindside from a scrum to put Santo into space to run away to score his second.

Hunters level with Townsville Blackhawks on ladder

Hunters drew with eighth placed Mackay Cutters 28-28 on Saturday at Stadium Mackay, Queensland.

The PNG side and Blackhawks are both on 39 points after each suffering three losses and one draw out of 23 games this season.

However, Blackhawks hold on to the number one spot due to points for and against with Hunters maintaining second place.

Hunters level on points with T’ville Blackhawks

Hunters gained two points after defeating Blackhawks in a close encounter 28-26 on the weekend at Kokopo in round 20 of the competition.

Despite levelling points, Blackhawks remain on top due to points for and against.

Ipswich Jets are third on the ladder with 30 points and Wynnum Manly Seagulls on fourth place with 28 points.

Hunters will host fifth placed East Tigers in Round 21 this weekend at Kokopo then play away against Ipswich Jets in Round 22 on August 8.

Hunters will then host Manly Seagulls on August 16 at Sir John Guise Stadium in Port Moresby.

Dolphins hold Hunters to draw

The second half started well for the Dolphins with their fullback scoring on the 46th minute. The conversion was unsuccessful so the score remains Dolphins 22 Hunters 16.

After Hunters were held up on the try line they re - grouped and pounced on the Dolphins defence,  scoring on the left wing through Ottio Bland. Conversion was unsuccessful. A penalty was awarded to the Hunters with Zeming splits the uprights to level the score 22 all.
