The late Nahau Rooney’s haus krai illustrates the leadership that women in PNG exercise to advocate for women’s political representation. Although Nahau Rooney’s passing did not receive the wide national media coverage extended to her male colleagues, her death was an important moment in PNG’s political history and its women’s political representation movement.

Ipatas Challenges Leaders

He made the comments at Grand Chief Michael Somare’s Haus Krai in Port Moresby last night. 

Governor Ipatas said the next current crop of leaders must aspire to Somare’s vision of developing the nation. 

Representing their Province, the Enga community in Port Moresby were led into the Haus Krai by Enga’s current and former political elite, as well as senior statesmen.

Governor Ipatas said he felt that the country had not reached the vision of Late Grad Chief Sir Michael Somare had.

Toroama pays tribute

An emotional President Toroama said this when paying his respects at Sir Michael’s haus krai. 

President Toroama led the Bougainville community to represent the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.

Toroama honoured Sir Michael as the nation’s founding father.

“You are truly the seed of this nation. A seed that stood and embraced democracy for this nation. A seed that truly believed that peace and freedom is what this nation should achieve. I salute you, on behalf of my people, I salute you with great honour and respect. May your soul rest in peace,” said Toroama. 

Special Parliament sitting to honour Grand Chief

As the body of the late Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare lay in state, the three arms of government will assemble to pay their last parliamentary respects to the founding father of Papua New Guinea.

While announcing the State funeral and Haus Krai arrangement for Grand Chief Sir Michael Thomas Somare, the Prime Minister says the body will lay in state at the Parliament House on Thursday 11th of March.

Motukoita open hauskrai

The people of MotuKoita were the first to visit with members of the Somare family. 

The Haus Krai will run for the next two weeks.

Provincial groups have been scheduled to come and spend time with the Somare family and grieve with them during this time of mourning. 

Like any haus krai, the event started off with fellowship and beautiful Motu singing.

The Haus Krai is being co-hosted by the National Capital District Commission.

Funeral arrangements for late Hau'ofa to be confirmed

Daughter of late Hau'ofa, Michelle says they’re planning to have the funeral on Friday, March 10 in Port Moresby.

The late Hau’ofa passed on peacefully at 11:42pm on Saturday, March at his wife Pauline’s village, Iare in Kairuku District, Central Province after suffering from a long illness. 

The body of late Hau’ofa was flown to Moresby from the village this morning on a Helifix chopper and is now at the Dove Funeral Home.

Ms Hau'ofa confirmed that the Haus Krai will be held at Paga Hill, Down Town over the next few days.
