Extension of Child and Family Services

Initially, all laws and the National Child Protection Policy (2017-2027) are all captured under the Department of Community Development and Religion. But now, they have realized a big need in addressing issues relating to children, and that children were the victims and victimized during family violence issues at home or in the communities.

This mandated the establishment of the National Office of Child and Family Services (NOCFS), a stand-alone entity solely concentrated on addressing issues such as protecting children’s rights and their welfare in the country.

Sandeka is the district coordinator for the Family Sexual Violence Unit under the Royal PNG Constabulary.

“Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly, so we cannot sit back and say that’s their problem, I’m not affected. Every one of us has to work together to see that family violence is reduced,” she said.

Former Judge Mere Pulea delivered the opening address at the Pacific Community Gender and the Law Consultation 2016 in Nadi during the week, which was organised by the Pacific Community’s Regional Rights Resource Team (RRRT) in partnership with UN Women and the Fiji Women’s Rights Movement.

“Putting in place laws against domestic violence in 11 Pacific Island countries is a major achievement which will have profound impacts on the lives of victims of violence. However, legislation in itself is only part of the solution,” Judge Pulea said.
